Rescues are often asked to take in horses by their owners. Central Virginia Horse Rescue gets 3 to 4 of these requests daily. While we try to help when we can, we would be quickly overwhelmed if we took in even half of the horses that we were asked. We ask that you answer the following questions and send pictures with your request. Send in email to rescue@centralvahorserescue.com
- Reason why your horse needs a rescue.
- Age of your horse
- Health/Soundness
- Current picture
- Location
- Contact information
If your horse has a body score of 3 or less, we will do everything we can to bring your horse to the rescue. If they are a 4 and losing or if you have nothing to feed your horses, please let us know. The economy is hard on all of us and hardship can happen to any of us. It is up to you to give us a realistic summary of your need. Decisions are made based on need of horses.

Central Virginia Horse Rescue does not offer retirement/sanctuary for horses. Our focus is on abused/neglected or slaughterbound horses and we do what we can to rehabilitate them and then find them new homes. While there is a need for retirement homes, our space is so limited that we just cannot offer this service.

If you are suffering an temporary economic hardship, we may be able to help with a hay grant to pay for feed for a short period of time. If your circumstances are more long term and you cannot afford to feed or care for any of your horses, we will do what we can to either take them in or find them homes.

While we would like to help every horse, our ability to help is limited by both space and volunteer availability.
