Jelly Bean
November 23, 2011 No CommentsIn 2009, Jelly Bean fell in the pasture and hurt himself. He was later diagnosed with a fractured hip and the vet gave him a year before he would have to be put down. Here he is in 2011, proving that sometimes the vets are wrong. Jelly gets around but definitely has a hitch in his walk. You can see in the picture that he has some muscle wasting from favoring his leg. Jelly used to be a child’s riding horse. He taught kids to ride and to love horses. They tell me he was quite a character.
When Jelly Bean’s owners couldn’t afford to keep him anymore, he had very few options. Not a lot of people want a 15 yr old horse that can’t be ridden. If given away, it is likely that Jelly Bean would have ended up at an auction and on a trip with no return.
Many people would argue that because Jelly doesn’t have any purpose anymore that his owners would have been wise to sell him for meat. Many people believe that slaughter is humane euthanasia. Jelly served his people well. He happily put up with the many mistakes that young riders make and repaid them with nuzzles and kisses. He was someone’s best friend.
Jelly Bean is one of the lucky ones. His owners loved him enough that they felt he deserved retirement with dignity and love. When I got the email about his predicament, we had to offer him a home. While we can’t take every horse, we try to take the ones who have no other options.
Jelly will be put on joint supplements and will be undergoing some gentle physical therapy to see if we can improve his muscle tone and movement. He does not seem to be in pain.
We would love to have a few sponsors for Jelly Bean. Sponsors help us give our horses the care that they need. They help with feed and supplements as well as vet bills and farrier care. Our sponsorships simply consist of a monthly payment from $10-$100. If you would like to help with Jelly Bean, you can click on the button below.
