Grace was Hip Number 301 at Camelot Auction on 9/22/2010. She was sold to the feedlot which means that she was at risk of going to slaughter. She ended up on the Camelot Horse Weekly Facebook page and a lady in VA fell in love.
The lady bought Grace and brought her to VA. Shortly after her arrival, they noticed some unsteadiness and wobblieness in her rear. She saw the vet imeadiately and was diagnosed with EPM. Her test results came back so high that the vet recommended that if there was to be any hope, she needed Marquis, a very expensive but very effective EPM medication.
Grace’s new owner was in a panic because she had spent a lot of money buying Grace and bringing her home. She didn’t have money left to pay for her medicine. She notified CHW and said she would give Grace to any rescue who would get her the help she needed.
We saw her cry for help and contacted her. Grace has been surrendered to CVHR but is staying at her previous owner’s so that it minimizes stress during her treatment. Thanks to One Horse At A Time for giving us an EPM grant and to her private Angels who are listed below, Grace received her first month of Marquis.
Before we decided on this course of treatment, we contacted the vet school at Virginia Tech and spoke with the vets there. This was the course of treatment that they recommended because of her high titre.
Dr. Martha tells me that Grace is recovering as well as can be expected. She may always have some residual nerve damage but her initial response to the medication is very encouraging. Her test results were so high that Dr. Martha would like Grace to have a second course of Marquis. This will make sure that all the protozoa are dead and the disease will not come back.
Marquis is $725 for a month. We have authorized the vet to order it and begin treatment. She is selling it to us at her cost. If you can help out with this cost, we would greatly appreciate it. Our paypal address is donations@centralvahorserescue.com Please mark the donation for Saving Grace.

UPDATE!! Grace has finished her final course of treatment with Marquis and her vet is very happy with the results. She is now off the medication and showing no symptoms of EPM. Here are a couple pictures of her first day out with the other horses.

I have donated a little help for Saving Grace…what a beautiful name for a lovely gal. I pray you continue to make progress sweetheart…I will keep you close to my heart.
Thank you, Honor! I will add you and her other donors to her list of Angels.
I was chatting with someone the other night on Facebook about Grace’s Marquis and think I fell asleep and then forgot to check for a response the next morning (so sorry!!). The online pharmacy I was talking about is http://www.allvetmed.com. They currently have Marquis (yes, name brand Marquis!!!) for $198.90/tube. This is not a bulk price or a veterinarian’s price. This is the price to the average consumer. It’s even a better price than my friend paid from them a couple years ago! I hope this is in time to save you some money. Best of luck with Grace and all the others
I wish you were closer I would love to adopt her she is a spitting image of a gelding I got at auction who passed he also had epm. we treated him with a homeopathic method. he completely recovered a lived a great life!!! I am soo happy to hear someone cares enough to help this mare and not just put her down there is a life after EPM!! The vet told me to put my boy down he would never even be able to be a horse well after treatment and some rest he continued doing everything he could before he got sick including hunter paces.
Hi Nicole, Grace will not be available for adoption until she is finished her EPM treatment. We don’t want to stress her any more than we have to while she is recovering. Her immune system needs all her energy to fight the disease.
I also have an EPM horse. We decided on the cheaper medicine, and added a homeopathic herbal treatment and Vitamin E loading (along with other critical vitamins and minerals important in the regeneration of neural pathways, as well as building muscle tissue… both of which are damaged by EPM). My horse looks better than ever. Is she perfect??? Not exactly… her gait is still a little goofy in the back… but, then again, she’s a TWH and they can have goofy gaits anyway. Good luck with rehabbing this horse!
Thank you for your response. Grace’s vet decided to treat this aggressively because her titre was so high. We are giving her additional Vitamin E though.
Please if you guys can afford it cocosoya from uckele is the best. it really help with the recovery of my boy. and if anyone can help with the cost and of course if the vet ok’s it a good all around immunebooster, uckele has alot of good product for epm horses. ” including a product that helps kill the protozoan in epm.”
Thank you, Nicole. We are working with a great vet on Grace’s treatment and she is now off of all medication.
I love her name
Is she going to stay with her owner? She is a beautiful horse! Us Grace’s have a knack for pulling through with the odds stacked against us!
