White Elephant Fundraiser & Contest

White Elephant - Everyone has one, that item that you have and will probably never use.

I have struggled with this note for weeks.  Earlier this summer we had a supporter who offered to donate 700 sq bales of hay to the rescue.  We were ecstatic and very relieved not to have to worry about winter hay.  Unfortunately, life sometimes doesn’t cooperate with the best laid and well meant plans and the donor has been unable to bale the hay that they expected because of medical reasons.  My heart goes out to their family as they work through them.  This, however, leaves the rescue with a bit of a problem.  It’s September, and we need at least 400 bales of hay to get us through the winter and we expect that it will cost us between $1500 and $2000.

White Elephants

I didn’t want to just ask people for money to buy hay.  I wanted to do something fun and different that wouldn’t cost people much.  I’ve looked into various fundraising sites and programs and they are ok but people have to donate.  A friend of mine stopped by last week and was talking about re-gifting some things that they had gotten for their birthday and that they didn’t think they would ever use.  We laughed about it but a light bulb went off in my head.

All of us have things that either were given to us or that we bought on a whim that are truly white elephants.  Things that held some appeal but that we will really never use.  Central Virginia Horse Rescue is going to have a White Elephant Sale.  We are asking our supporters to open their closets and tack rooms and find something that they will probably never use and donate it to the rescue.  White Elephants can be ANYTHING: clothes, decorative items, tack, anything…

Ahhh, if Ralphie had only known about our White Elephant sale!

How to donate your White Elephant

  • You can pack it up and send it to the rescue and we will list it on ebay(This is preferred because the payment comes directly to us and we don’t have to wait 45 days). Mailing address for the rescue is: CVHR, 389 Boydton Plank Road, Brodnax, VA 23920
  • You can list it on ebay and list us as a charity through eBay giving works (This takes 45 days to get to the rescue.)
  • You can drop it off at the Rescue.
  • You can send me pictures, I will list on ebay and you can ship direct to the auction winner.
  • Of course, if you don’t have a White Elephant (I think everyone does) and would prefer just to donate our paypal is donations@centralvahorserescue.com  or checks can be sent to CVHR, 389 Boydton Plank Road, Brodnax, VA 23920

Thank you for taking a moment to read and for your continued support!
